A Thread Retrieval Kit can be obtained from Zimmer Dental and be used as an aid
to remove broken screws. The kit includes a Thread Retriever latch bur and a Guide
Sleeve. If the instruments are used properly, the fractured thread may be retrieved
without damage to the internal threads of the implant body. NOTE: The guide sleeve
that is included with the kit is specific to the implant type placed. You must provide
Customer Service with the correct implant type to obtain the correct guide sleeve.
The Guide Sleeve is placed on or in(depending on the restorative table of the implant.)
A hemostat should be used to hold the Guide Sleeve in place. The Guide Sleeve will
center the Thread Retriever over the fractured thread. Insert the Thread Retriever
into the hand piece and carefully place the Thread Retriever through the Guide Sleeve.
Note: Due to the very small diameter tip of the Thread Retriever, it is essential
that no lateral forces be applied. Keeping the Thread Retriever straight, apply
moderate occlusal pressure and begin rotating in a counterclockwise (reverse ) direction
at a speed between 35 and 50 rpm. Periodically remove the Guide Sleeve to clean
any metal shavings from around the site using water or air with suction. After replacing
the Guide Sleeve, continue applying moderate pressure rotating the Thread Retriever
until it grabs the fractured screw and backs it out. If the internal threads of
the implant body have been damaged, you may use a Thread Tap obtained from Customer
Service to resurface the threads.
